Inspired by the passing of my father.

Lyrics

Unfinished Business

Dad looked like hell in that hospice bed
Waking up from the medicine
I stopped short at the door
It hurt to see him weak that way
It was hard to find the strength to say
Something I never said before
All the times you went away when I was a kid
Was it something you had to do or something that I did?

I’ve got Unfinished Business here in my heart
That unanswered question that’s been keeping us apart
I’ve thought you didn’t love me, now I’ve got to see this through
So Unfinished Business won’t keep me from loving you

I held his hand and he squeezed mine
Like a drowning man on a lifeline
Tears welled up in his eyes
He said the years flew by way too fast
While we have this moment, let’s make it last
‘Cause I’m not ready for good-bye
Wish I’d spent more time at home when you were a kid
Wish I’d said I love you more often than I did

I’ve got Unfinished Business here in my heart
It’s been a work in progress, an’ I didn’t get that far
I pray that you’ll forgive me, I’ve got no excuse
But Unfinished Business won’t keep me from loving you

We hugged and the distance we’d known for so long
Gave way in an instant to what we wanted all along
He smiled as he closed his eyes, we both felt released
And our Unfinished Business could finally rest in peace
