NSAI Ones To Watch List - December, 2013

A shout out to awesome songwriters Maurice Byrne, Phil Nudleman and Nomi Yah, with each of whom I have had the pleasure of co-writing new songs that have resulted in my (our) making Nashville Songwriters Association International's "Ones To Watch" list for songs that NSAI evaluators reviewed in December, 2013. To quote NSAI, "These writers are being recognized by our evaluators as writers who are on the rise! These members have gotten the attention of our evaluators for their unique and promising writing skills. Keep an eye on these folks. . . they just keep getting better." Thanks NSAI!

Charles Johnson’s Indian Summer - Review by Jack Foley of KPFA-FM and online at The Alsop Review

It includes the following excerpt about the song I wrote for the play: "And there is Denis Loiseau’s poignant song, “Back to the Top” written especially for Indian Summer. It is the composition of Charlie Ray (that finally makes it to the radio.  It encapsulates the mood of the entire piece.)"

"Back To The Top" Selected As Only Song In New Play, "Indian Summer"

"Back To The Top" was licensed as the only song to be used in a new Charles Johnson play entitled "Indian Summer" which will open at the Exit Theatre in San Francisco on October 4, having been selected over several other songs that were under consideration. For ticket information, click here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/454116.

I was referred to playwright and actor, Charles Johnson, by my friends, Wilson and Emily Lyles. I met him at their 2010 Christmas Party at which he gave me a copy of the script.  I was inspired by the story to figuratively crawl into the head of a shady character in an effort to portray his state of mind in a song, without giving away details of the play.

"Unfinished Business" Wins Best Song in Marin Songwriters' Competition

"Unfinished Business," co-written with Jeff Wessman, won Best Song in the November, 2012 Marin West Coast Songwriters (WCS) Songwriters' Competition held at the Belrose in San Rafael, CA.

I wasn't planning to play, but did so when the host/MC offered to let me play his guitar, and I'm glad I did!
