Lyrics

KIDS ARE CATCHIN' CRAWDADS BY THE LEVEE

LIVER ON A STRING AND A COFFEE CAN

PLAYIN' HIDE AND SEEK IN THE MEADOW

JUMPIN' IN THE WATER BY THE LOADIN' RAMP

STEALIN' SMOKES BEHIND THE BARN

SHOOTIN' BOTTLES WITH A PELLET GUN

SCATTER LIKE BIRDS WHEN THE DINNER BELL RINGS

SNEAKIN' OUT WHEN NIGHTFALL COMES

WHOA YEAH, DON'T IT MAKE YA HOLLER

LIKE A HOUND DOG HOWLIN' WHEN THE TRAIN COMES 'ROUND

LORD KNOWS, YA NEVER GET ENOUGH

KICKIN' UP THE DUST IN YOUR STOMPIN' GROUNDS

          IN YOUR STOMPIN' GROUNDS

HOME TEAM WINNIN' ON A FRIDAY NIGHT

OLD SCORES ARE SETTLED IN THE PARKIN' LOT

TWO CARS MEET AT THE COUNTY LINE

ENGINES REVVIN' UP FOR THE PISTOL SHOT

SWEET YOUNG THINGS PLAYIN' HARD TO GET

BAD BOYS LAYIN' ON THE CHARM

SPARKS FLYIN' HIGH FROM A BIG BONFIRE

A KEGGER KICKIN' UP AT THE FARM

WHOA YEAH, DON'T IT MAKE YA HOLLER

LIKE A HOUND DOG HOWLIN' WHEN THE TRAIN COMES 'ROUND

LORD KNOWS, YA NEVER GET ENOUGH

KICKIN' UP THE DUST IN YOUR STOMPIN' GROUNDS

UP ALL NIGHT AN' STILL GOIN' STRONG

DRUNK DUDE ON THE MICROPHONE

BEAT BOX PREACHIN', EVERYBODY SCREAMIN'

NOBODY HERE GOIN' HOME!

WHOA YEAH, DON'T IT MAKE YA HOLLER

LIKE A HOUND DOG HOWLIN' WHEN THE TRAIN COMES 'ROUND

LORD KNOWS, YA NEVER GET ENOUGH

KICKIN' UP THE DUST IN YOUR STOMPIN' GROUNDS

WHOA YEAH, DON'T IT MAKE YA HOLLER

LIKE A HOUND DOG HOWLIN' WHEN THE TRAIN COMES 'ROUND

LORD KNOWS, YA NEVER GET ENOUGH

KICKIN' UP THE DUST IN YOUR STOMPIN' GROUNDS

Story

Inspired by the heartwarming true story of an old man who had lost his wife and a chance meeting with a little girl

Lyrics

She'd been my wife nearly half of my life

When the good Lord took her back from me, it stabbed me like a knife

I stayed at home alone, a cold and hopeless stranger

Until her voice rang through my memory; she said I Believe In Angels

Angels From Heaven, strong and brave

They can reach down deep inside us and help us find our way

Shine a light into the darkness on a path to brighter days

And though we need to help ourselves, they find us when life is painful

          I Believe In Angels

After church, a little girl looked up

She said today's my birthday, will you give me a hug?

Her Mom smiled and shrugged her shoulders - those little arms held me like cables

I swear my wife was there with me 'cause I Believe In Angels

Angels From Heaven, strong and brave

They can reach down deep inside us and help us find our way

Shine a light into the darkness on a path to brighter days

And though we need to help ourselves, they find us when life is painful

          I Believe In Angels

Now I have people in my life again

And sometimes when I see them

I can see their perfect wings

And know we're all here for a reason

We're Angels From Heaven, strong and brave

We can reach down deep inside and help each other find our way

Shine a light into the darkness on a path to brighter days

And we've all been called to someone's side when their life is painful

          I Believe In Angels

Lyrics

HE LOOKED LIKE HELL IN THAT HOSPICE BED

STILL WAKING FROM THE MEDICINE

I STOPPED SHORT AT THE DOOR

IT HURT TO SEE MY OLD MAN THAT WAY

I PRAYED FOR THE STRENGTH TO SAY

SOMETHING I NEVER SAID BEFORE

I'VE GOT UNFINISHED BUSINESS HERE IN MY HEART

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS - BEEN KEEPING US APART

ALL THE TIMES YOU WENT AWAY WHEN I WAS A KID

WAS IT SOMETHING YOU HAD TO DO OR SOMETHING THAT I DID?

IT'S NOT EASY TO FORGIVE YOU BUT I'VE GOT TO SEE THIS THROUGH

SO UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU

I HELD HIS HAND AND HE SQUEEZED MINE

LIKE A DROWNING MAN ON A LIFELINE

THEN HE LOOKED ME IN THE EYE

HE SAID THE END MAY COME SLOW OR FAST

WE'VE GOT THIS MOMENT LET'S MAKE IT LAST

'CAUSE I'M NOT READY FOR GOOD-BYE

I'VE GOT UNFINISHED BUSINESS HERE IN MY HEART

IT'S BEEN WORK IN PROGRESS, I DIDN'T GET THAT FAR

COULDA SPENT MORE TIME AT HOME WHEN YOU WERE A KID

SHOULDA SAID I LOVE YOU MORE OFTEN THAN I DID

I PRAY THAT YOU'LL FORGIVE ME - I'VE GOT NO EXCUSE

BUT UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU

UNFINISHED BUSINESS WON’T KEEP ME FROM LOVING YOU

Lyrics

Can he tell by the way I'm stirring my spoon

That we're getting close but it might be too soon?

I lost my true love without any warning,

But I've been wondering this morning:

Am I Ready To Love Again?

Sometimes I doubt that it's worth a try.

Am I Ready To Love Again?

I've been afraid that part of me died.

But being with him makes me feel so alive

Like I'm Ready To Love Again

Is there only one shot at a love like I had,

Or a cure for the pain from a loss like that?

I'm losing my balance and starting to fall

If I let myself go will he answer the call?

Am I Ready To Love Again?

Sometimes I doubt that it's worth a try.

Am I Ready To Love Again?

I've been afraid that part of me died.

But being with him makes me feel so alive

Like I'm Ready To Love Again

Is my wound too deep, will the scar still show?

Will I get clumsy when the lights are low?

If I lose my nerve will he understand?

I'll never know if I don't take a chance.

Am I Ready To Love Again?

Sometimes I doubt that it's worth a try.

Am I Ready To Love Again?

I've been afraid that part of me died.

But being with him makes me feel so alive

That I'm Ready To Love Again

I'm Ready to Love Again

Story

Written as the only song in the play, representing the protagonist's perspective on life.

Lyrics

I once tasted my dream
And let it slip right from my hand
The best feeling I ever had
And I gotta get it back again
They call me one hit wonder and two time loser
And I'm gonna make 'em stop
I'm gonna do whatever it takes
To climb Back To The Top

I've been caught in crime and done my time
Now I'm trying to catch up
I'm running as fast as I can
But that's not fast enough
Like a prison yard it's every man for himself
I'm just another crab in the pot
I'm gonna do whatever it takes
To climb Back To The Top

I know I'm a star, that's all I can see
And nobody can take my dream away from me

They say patience is a virtue
But the world don't work like that
If you've got what I want or get in my way
You better watch your back
'Cause I'll pray to God or the Devil
Whichever one suits my cause
I'm gonna do whatever it takes
To climb Back To The Top
Yeah I'm gonna do whatever it takes
To climb Back To The Top

Lyrics

Momma worked on the farmhard as any man I know

She could plow and sow the fields, and when she had to shoot the crows

She had faith in the land and sky, faith in the good books verse

She pulled us through like a string of a shoewith her wise and simple words

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

When the grass is tall and dry

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

          Stack that barn rafter high

There’s a time for summer, a time for snow

A time to let things go

          From the break of daylight

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

So when I lay staring at the ceiling, my heart like a ton of lead

There’s momma’s voice in the back of my head with those healing words she said

Even if it rains like hell and we have to start from scratch

There’s a brighter spell ahead; thank God for what we have

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

When the grass is tall and dry

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

          Stack that barn rafter high

There’s a time for summer, a time for snow

A time to let things go

          From the break of daylight

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

There’s a change on the horizon now, from midnight blue to gold

I’m puttin' on my boots, there’s coffee on the stove

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

When the grass is tall and dry

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

          Stack that barn rafter high

There’s a time for summer, a time for snow

A time to let things go

          From the break of daylight

Make Hay When The Sun Shines

Lyrics

Win or lose I do my best

I work just as hard as all the rest

Yeah sure things blow up in my face

Been a long shot but won the race

And when my spirit's aching

I know that I can take it

It's all part of My Life's Dance

It's always best to take a chance

When I fall down I jump back up

There's one thing I know I can trust

          An' it's My Life's Dance

Inside I might be afraid

But I'm not one to hesitate

Each step might be my last

I smile and I give a little laugh

I'm not wasting my time

I'm going for what can be mine

It's all part of My Life's Dance

It's always best to take a chance

When I fall down I jump back up

There's one thing I know I can trust

          It's My Life's Dance

In the end what will matter most

Is how high I reach, how deep I can go

It's all part of My Life's Dance

It's always best to take a chance

When I fall down I jump back up

And one thing I know I can trust

          Is My Life's Dance

t's all part of My Life's Dance

It's always best to take a chance

When I fall down I jump back up

An' there's one thing I know I can trust

          It's My Life's Dance

Lyrics

It’s a glint in the eye of the enemy
The glare says I'm the one to beat
A test to see whose steel is stronger
See there's no monster to defeat
Just a face-to-face and what's in between
You're gonna see whose fire burns longer

So don't look down
No one calls you a hero
'Til you're the last one standing your ground

It’s an Inside game if you know how to play it
It’s the will to stay, you can bend it or break it
It's your name to make so the whole world is sayin' it:
Who can take you down?

You've seen that look a thousand times
That dimming fight behind the eyes
The smell of blood awakens your hunger
You'll know when the time is right
That perfect moment when you strike
You'll get to taste the spoils of the hunter

Go on, get tough
Strike the bone to the marrow
And be the last one standing your ground

It’s an Inside game if you know how to play it
It’s the will to stay, you can bend it or break it
It's your name to make so the whole world is sayin' it:
Who can take you down?
It's an inside game, so be tougher than metal
If you want to win put your foot to the pedal
And if in the end you're still unbreakable
Who can take you down?

(Don't look down)
There's only one place at the top
(Don't look down)
So stay ahead of your rival
(Don't look down)
If you're the one who can't be stopped
(Don't look down)
Then rise and take your place

It’s an Inside game if you know how to play it
It’s the will to stay, you can bend it or break it
It's your name to make so the whole world is sayin' it:
Who can take you down?
It's an inside game, so be tougher than metal
If you want to win put your foot to the pedal
And if in the end you're still unbreakable
Who can take you down?

Lyrics

An old jacket on his back and all he could pack in a shopping cart
I was paying for a tank of gas with my Master Card
I braced for his plea knowing what he'd say and looked the other way
Shaking my head thinking that's the last thing I need today

Don't We All, Don't We All - gotta ask for a helping hand
Don’t We All, Don't We All - turn a blind eye to another man
I beg forgiveness in my prayers, strength to be someone who cares
          Whoa-oh Don't We All

I gave him what I could to buy a hot meal and get a good night’s sleep
He said I'm looking hard for work and it kills me not to earn my keep
God bless you man, he shook my hand; I answered it ain't enough
I wish I could do more and hope it helps to change your luck

Don't We All, Don't We All - gotta ask for a helping hand
Don’t We All, Don't We All - turn a blind eye to another man
I beg forgiveness in my prayers, strength to be someone who cares
          Whoa-oh Don't We All

He said life's tightening 'round my neck
All I want is some respect

Don't We All, Don't We All - gotta ask for a helping hand
Don’t We All, Don't We All - turn a blind eye to another man
I beg forgiveness in my prayers, strength to be someone who cares
          Whoa-oh Don't We All

Don't We All, Don't We All - gotta ask for a helping hand
Don’t We All, Don't We All - turn a blind eye to another man
I beg forgiveness in my prayers, strength to be someone who cares
          Whoa-oh Don't we all

Lyrics

You sure could say I love you like I’d never heard before

And your boy next-door smile only made me want you more

And then you drank all my best wine right after I moved in

And you ate our cupboards down to plywood, never pitching in

No Second Thoughts

I’m looking straight ahead

You burned me one too many times

I'm through looking in my rearview

No Second Thoughts for me

I’m leaving you behind

I believed you were sorry when you sent me that bouquet

When you paid half the rent, boy I really thought you’d changed

But then you hit on my best girlfriend, what the hell is wrong with you?

You can find your clothes in the fire pit, got the message, dude?

No Second Thoughts

I’m looking straight ahead

You burned me one too many times

I'm through looking in my rearview

No Second Thoughts for me

I’m leaving you behind

I’m so damn mad I got sucked in

I Let you play me like a cheap violin

I’m never making that mistake again

No Second Thoughts

I’m looking straight ahead

You burned me one too many times

I'm through looking in my rearview

No Second Thoughts for me

I’m leaving you behind

No Second Thoughts

I'm leaving you behind

Every Child's Eyes was inspired by a true story and by my long-time volunteer involvement with CASA - both at the California CASA Association, and prior to that at Marin Marin Advocates for Children which houses the Marin CASA program, one of 45 county programs that California CASA serves.

I am thankful to my co-writer, Maurice Byrne, and to California CASA for for selecting Every Child's Eyes as the song to be used in a music video for CASA volunteer recruitment and fund-raising purposes in California so that more children can be served by this profound organization.

Lyrics

Every Child's Eyes

I drive a bus for Central Valley Schools

The children know to follow all the rules

The shy kids sit in front, the loud ones in the back

Good kids from the first one to the last

Jason's from the new group foster home

His mom's in rehab and his dad he's never known

He waves when I pull up, and when I open the door

We talk about snakes and dinosaurs

          There's a light in Every Child's Eyes

With smiles that can't be denied

An excitement for life and a hope that can't die

          There's a light in Every Child's Eyes

A CASA volunteer wanted to meet

He said the boy's mom was back out on the street

I'm someone that Jason says he loves

Now my wife and I will never give him up

          There's a light in Every Child's Eyes

With smiles that can't be denied

An excitement for life and a hope that can't die

          There's a light in Every Child's Eyes

When children can't rely on grown-ups who should be there

It's up to you and me to be the ones who care

To keep a Light in Every Child's Eyes

With smiles that can't be denied

An excitement for life and a hope that can't die

          There's a light in Every Child's Eyes

A light in Every Child's Eyes

A light in Every Child's Eyes

Lyrics

I was young and on my own

Growing tired of one-night stands

I knew it from the moment I met you

The first time we held hands

I Choose You - You see right through me

I Choose You - Right from the start

I Choose You - You fill me with wonder

          I Choose You

I thought I knew what I wanted

Satisfied with my routines

I left that all behind me

You dared me to share my dreams

I Choose You - You fill me with wonder

I Choose You - Time and again

I Choose You - Moment to moment

          I Choose You.

                    I still can't believe it's true

That I found someone like you

Or the way I feel when you're in my arms

And you tell me you love me, too

Every once-in-awhile

Temptation looks my way

I just smile, and I walk on by

I think of you and I say

I Choose You - You fill me with wonder

I Choose You - Through thick and thin

I Choose You  - Moment to moment

          I Choose You
